Sorption speciation of nickel(II) onto Ca-montmorillonite: batch, EXAFS techniques and modeling.

چکیده
The sorption speciation of Ni(II) on Ca-montmorillonite was evaluated using a combination of batch experiments, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy and modeling. The pH and temperature at the aqueous-montmorillonite interface affects both the extent of Ni(II) sorption as well as the local atomic structure of the adsorbed Ni(II) ions. At 0.001 mol L(-1) Ca(NO(3))(2) and low pH, the study reveals that the majority of Ni(II) is adsorbed in the interlayers of Ca-montmorillonite coordinated by six water molecules in an octahedron as an outer-sphere complex. At higher pH, inner-sphere surface complexes are formed. The Ni-Si/Al distances (R(Ni-Al) = 3.00 Å, R(Ni-Si1) = 3.10 Å and R(Ni-Si2) = 3.26 Å) determined by EXAFS confirm the formation of mononuclear complexes located at the edges of Ca-montmorillonite platelets at pH 7.5 and 8.5. At pH 10.0, the Ni-Ni/Si distances (R(Ni-Ni) = 3.07 Å and R(Ni-Si) = 3.26 Å) indicates the formation of Ni-phyllosilicate precipitates. A rise in temperature promotes inner-sphere complexation, which in turn leads to an increase in Ni(II) sorption on Ca-montmorillonite. Sorption edges are fitted excellently by surface complexation model (SCM) with the aid of surface species determined from EXAFS spectroscopy.

Effect of humic acid on nickel(II) sorption to Ca-montmorillonite by batch and EXAFS techniques study.
The influence of humic acid (HA) on Ni(II) sorption to Ca-montmorillonite was examined by using a combination of batch sorption experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy technique. The sorption of Ni(II) on HA-montmorillonite hybrids is strongly dependent on pH and temperature. At low pH, the sorption of Ni(II) is mainly dominated by Ni-HA-montmorillonite and...
متن کاملSorption of Nickel(II) on a Calcareous Aridisol Soil, China: Batch, XPS, and EXAFS Spectroscopic Investigations
The sorption of Ni(II) on a calcareous aridisol (CA) soil, one of the major soil types in northwestern China, was investigated using batch and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) approaches in a 0.01 mol/L NaClO4 solution at different pH values (6.0-10.0), temperatures (25-60 °C) and contact times (2-15 days). Under alkaline conditions, EXAFS analysis showed that the interatomic di...
متن کاملCd(II) Sorption on Montmorillonite-Humic acid-Bacteria Composites
Soil components (e.g., clays, bacteria and humic substances) are known to produce mineral-organic composites in natural systems. Herein, batch sorption isotherms, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC), and Cd K-edge EXAFS spectroscopy were applied to investigate the binding characteristics of Cd on montmorillonite(Mont)-humic acid(HA)-bacteria composites. Additive sorption and non-additive Cd(...

In environmental studies, we need to be able to predict the behaviour of contaminants in more or less complex physico-chemical contexts. The improvement of this prediction partly depends on establishing thermodynamic models that can describe the behaviour of these contaminants and, in particular, the sorption reactions on mineral surfaces. In this way, based on the mass action law, it is possib...

This research was conducted to study the effect of natural and polyacrylamide-modified montmorillonite on the sorption of Cd from aqueous solutions. The sorption of Cd on the sorbents was studied as a function of pH (Cd concentration: 10 mg L-1) in the range of 4-8.5, and as a function of metal concentration (Cd concentration in the range of 1-10 mgL-1) using a 24h batch equilibration. Experime...
